Abstinence to Living Life Recovery

My recovery journey began in 1986.That is when I was introduced to Alcoholics Anonymous and the Twelve Steps. I learned them and applied some of them.

I listened in meetings when they suggested you ‘take what you want and leave the rest.’ Looking back now I think that was also my attitude to the Steps. The result of this was periods of abstinence and periods of relapse.

In 1989 I began ‘Living Life Recovery’ Up till now (because I haven’t really thought about it) I credited it to the prayer I prayed at the side of my bed, where I heard the voice of Jesus say “You don’t have to live like this anymore, follow me and I will lead you!” Which I still believe was a big part of my transformation. But, it was also due to a Bible Study I was introduced to early on in recovery:

NAVIGATORS, nine weeks of studies in Christian living that set spiritual disciplines in my recovery early and gave me a thirst for God knowledge that has continued in me till this day.

Successfully living life recovery I am certain requires we develop a yearning to understand God’s purpose for our lives, seek to find it and apply it on a daily basis to every area of our lived.

Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [ in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. [1 Peter 5:8 AMP]
