4o Days of Recovery – Day 16

STEP FIVE: On completion of my list of sinful habits, I will confess them to God and to someone who I trust.

The Bible says People will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! They are the kind who work their way into people’s homes and win the confidence of vulnerable women who are burdened with the guilt of sin and controlled by various desires.

Check your life against Paul’s list when looking for a mentor. Don’t give in to the temptation to just pick anyone for the wrong reasons. Don’t settle for comfort without commitment. Picking the right person as a mentor or accountability partner is one of the biggest decisions you will make in the recovery process. Take time to pray about it, don’t rush it. None of us got to rock bottom overnight and we will not recover from addiction and compulsion overnight. With God’s help and guidance, we will find the right person and we will develop lasting relationships with people who will have a positive influence on our character.
