Stop Listening to bad advice.

I’m simply trying to point out that under your new Master you’re going to experience a marvelous freedom you would never have dreamed of. On the other hand, if you were free when Christ called you, you’ll experience a delightful “enslavement to God” you would never have dreamed of. All of you, slave and free both, were once held hostage in a sinful society. Then a huge sum was paid out for your ransom. So please don’t, out of old habit, slip back into being or doing what everyone else tells you. Friends, stay where you were called to be. God is there. Hold the high ground with him at your side. 1 Corinthians 7:22-24

The world is full of ‘experts in their own minds.’ Willing to give you advice on how they think you should conduct your recovery.

When I first came to Alcoholics Anonymous they told me to “get a sponsor, listen to them and do what they tell you.” So that is what I did. Unsuccessfully! With the best of intentions my sponsor taught me to mirror what they did, because in their understanding that was how you achieved sobriety. And, they were right. That was how you achieved sobriety but not necessarily how you achieved recovery.

The scripture above encourages us to stay where we were called to be. To understand what works for you in recovery you may need to try a number of brands of recovery. Alcoholics Anonymous doesn’t work for everybody, neither many of the other brands. For me the brand that works is Bible-based recovery, not because of the Bible but because through Bible-based recovery I was introduced to Jesus Christ and daily interaction with the Holy Spirit in my life.

I am sure after all these years in recovery their are people still waiting for me to relapse so they can say “I told you so.” The last thing this scripture encourages us to do to “Hold the high ground with Him at your side.”

The most important thing in my recpvery and in my life is personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Listening to His advice, seeking His will, reading and studying His word and His ways so I can be a better man today than I was yesterday
